We had a very good day of Hammer and Shot Put coaching in Templemore last week (organised by Tipperary Athletics and Munster Athletics) with coaches Phil Conway and Dave Sweeney running the event. Thanks to the athletes and coaches that attended and to Aisling Hoey of Munster Athletics for organising..

“NIA LIVE” This is an innovative evening competition series starting at National Indoor Arena. There will be some good opportunities to get a Shot Put mark early in the season to see how your training is going – all in the super National Indoor Arena track at Abbotstown, Dublin. Sat 18th November NATIONAL THROWS SQUAD DAY (Hammer, Discus, Javelin & Shot Put groups)
Time: 10am to 4pm
Venue: Tullamore, Co Offaly
Content: Event Technical focus plus Competition information for coming year and training information. This session will be led by our National coaches and will build on the first squad day. This will be part of the continual improvement program being coordinated by the National coaches and run in cooperation with each athlete’s individual coach.
Important: Please bring the following: Snack for lunch / Water / Wetgear if raining / 2-3 throwing implements each. No implements will be provided.
Sat 2nd December THROWS STRENGTH & CONDITIONING
Time: 10am to 3pm
Venue: (Dublin Venue - To be Confirmed – Timetable will be released closer to event)
Content: This session will focus on the basic development strength exercises that all throwers should be competent at. This will be a mix of instruction and practical exercises for all squad athletes and their coaches. The session will be led by Tommy Mooney who is an experienced weight lifter and strength coach. This will be the first part of a Throws Strength series of practical sessions. Subsequent sessions will focus on the more advanced explosive exercises.
Sat 2nd December NATIONAL JAVELIN SQUAD – Specific Javelin squad day with Terry McHugh (Irish Record Holder and Head Throws Coach at Swiss Athletics). Attendance at previous and future national squad events will be an entry requirement for participation in this event. (Dublin Venue – To be Confirmed)
Sun 3rd December “HOW TO COACH JAVELIN AND DISCUS” – This is a 1 day event for coaches with a full program looking at the fundamental teaching skills to coach BOTH Javelin and Discus. This will be aimed at Club and Schools coaches. The event will be run by Terry McHugh (Olympian & Irish Record Holder) and Dave Sweeney (National Throws Coordinator). Further details will appear on Athletics Ireland website. (Venue To Be Confirmed)
We hope to bring in specialist coaching knowledge to Develop Hammer Coaches & Athletes during this season. We will bring you more details on this towards the end of the year.
Most athletes / coaches are extremely efficient in replying to emails. I would expect that everyone should be like this. This greatly assists in the organisation and planning for event days such as the above.
